Example of a 5-Point Scale
Here is an example of a 5 Point Scale (ref-The Incredible 5 Point Scale- https://www.5pointscale.com/) developed collaboratively between a young person and a clinician. It shows how scales can be personalised to reflect a young person’s own interests, making them more meaningful and engaging.
Scales like this can also be adapted with pictures or characters, providing a stronger visual reference to support understanding. By connecting the scale to something familiar and enjoyable, young people are empowered to recognise their feelings, identify triggers, and use their own calming tools to self-regulate.

“This rocket scale uses pictures and colours to help children spot their feelings and learn what helps them feel calm.” We like to refer to the Zones of Regulation tool “As outlined in The Zones of Regulation® by Leah Kuypers…”
Becoming a 'Social Detective' through the Social Thinking® approach helps young people explore clues and understand others’ thoughts, feelings, and responses. This resource shows how you can design your own worksheets to support this learning.
