What is Autistic Inertia? Understanding Why Starting and Stopping Tasks Can Feel So Difficult

Have you ever found yourself wanting to start something but feeling completely unable to begin? Or perhaps you've finally settled into an activity, only to discover that stopping feels just as difficult?
Many autistic children, young people and adults describe exactly this experience. It can be confusing, frustrating and is often misunderstood by others as laziness, avoidance or a lack of motivation. In reality, many autistic people experience something known as autistic inertia.
What is autistic inertia?
Autistic inertia describes the difficulty some autistic people experience with starting, stopping or changing activities. Rather than simply being about motivation, it reflects a genuine difficulty with transitions between one state, task or activity and another.
It can affect all kinds of everyday activities, including:
Getting out of bed in the morning.
Starting homework or work tasks.
Beginning household chores.
Getting into the shower.
Leaving the house.
Switching from one activity to another.
Stopping a favourite activity, even when they want to.
Responding to messages or making phone calls.
Going to bed at night.
The challenge is not necessarily knowing what needs to be done. Often, the person wants to do it but feels unable to initiate the movement or mental shift needed to begin.

It's not about being lazy
One of the biggest misconceptions is that autistic inertia reflects laziness or a lack of effort.
In fact, many autistic people describe feeling as though they are "stuck". They know exactly what they need to do and may be thinking about it constantly, yet still struggle to translate that intention into action.
This can be incredibly distressing. Some people report becoming frustrated with themselves because they cannot understand why something that appears simple for others feels so difficult.
Why does autistic inertia happen?
Researchers are still learning about autistic inertia, but several factors appear to contribute.
Executive functioning differences
Executive functions are the brain's management skills that help us organise, plan, initiate and switch between tasks.
Many autistic people experience differences in executive functioning, making it harder to:
initiate tasks,
shift attention,
organise sequences of actions,
change focus once engaged.
This means the greatest challenge often occurs at the point of transition, rather than during the activity itself.
Predictability feels safer
Many autistic people rely on predictability because it reduces uncertainty and cognitive load.
Changing activities requires the brain to process new information, adjust expectations and prepare for something different. Even positive changes can therefore feel mentally demanding.
Remaining with the current activity often feels easier because it is already familiar and predictable.
The role of sensory processing
Sensory experiences can also contribute to autistic inertia.
Sometimes the activity someone is doing feels calming or regulating. For example:
warm water in the shower,
sitting under a weighted blanket,
reading,
gaming,
listening to music,
engaging in a special interest.
Leaving that activity may mean giving up a sensory experience that feels comfortable and moving into something that feels less predictable or more overwhelming.
The opposite can also happen. Starting an activity that involves unpleasant sensory experiences, such as getting into a cold shower, putting on certain clothes or entering a noisy classroom, can make initiating that activity much harder.

Energy and cognitive load
Autistic people often spend significant mental energy processing social interactions, sensory information and everyday demands.
By the end of the day, there may be very little cognitive energy left for initiating new tasks.
This helps explain why many people find transitions particularly difficult after school, work or busy social situations.
It's not just children
Autistic inertia affects people of all ages.
Adults may experience difficulties:
starting work despite wanting to be productive,
replying to emails,
making appointments,
preparing meals,
beginning household tasks,
leaving the house,
changing between work and relaxation.
Children may appear to:
"freeze" when asked to start homework,
become distressed when asked to leave an activity,
remain sitting long after everyone else has moved,
struggle to transition between lessons,
find bedtime routines particularly difficult.
Understanding these behaviours as differences in task initiation rather than defiance can completely change the way we respond.
How can we help?
While autistic inertia cannot simply be "overcome" through willpower, there are strategies that can make transitions easier.
Helpful approaches may include:
Breaking tasks into very small first steps.
Providing advance warning before transitions.
Using visual schedules or timers.
Reducing unnecessary demands during periods of overwhelm.
Supporting predictable routines.
Allowing extra processing time.
Beginning tasks alongside another person ("body doubling"), where appropriate.
Acknowledging that starting is often the hardest part.
Most importantly, avoid assuming someone is choosing not to engage. A compassionate, supportive approach is far more effective than increasing pressure.
Understanding, not judgement
Autistic inertia is increasingly recognised within autism research and by the autistic community, although it is not currently a formal diagnostic criterion. For many people, however, it provides a helpful explanation for experiences they have struggled to describe for years.
Rather than asking:
"Why won't they just do it?"
it can be more helpful to ask:
"What is making this transition difficult?"
That small shift in perspective can lead to greater understanding, reduced frustration and more effective support.
Does this happen in ADHD too?
Many people with ADHD also experience significant difficulties with starting and stopping activities. Although the outward behaviour can appear very similar, the underlying reasons are not always the same.
For autistic people, these difficulties are often associated with challenges transitioning between activities, a preference for predictability, sensory processing differences and executive functioning.
For people with ADHD, difficulties are more commonly linked to executive functioning differences, task initiation, time blindness, hyperfocus and the way the brain regulates attention and motivation.
Many individuals are autistic and have ADHD, meaning these experiences often overlap and interact. Understanding the underlying reason is important because it helps us provide support that is tailored to the individual, rather than assuming they simply need to "try harder."
