Understanding ADHD Through Real-Time Brain Imaging @Leanne Maskell of ADHD Works.

Just had to share these powerful images reveal side-by-side brain activity in an individual with ADHD compared with a neurotypical brain, both recorded in the same environment, first at rest with eyes closed, and then while scrolling on a phone.

The contrast is striking. The ADHD brain shows heightened, widespread activation, offering clear visual evidence that neurodivergent brains experience and process the world differently.

While brain imaging has long been used in autism research, this is one of the first demonstrations of real-time activity highlighting the unique neurological profile of ADHD.

Why does this matter?

✔️ For non-neurodivergent people: these images make it impossible to ignore the biological reality of ADHD, helping to foster understanding and compassion for those whose brains function differently.

✔️ For neurodivergent individuals: they offer validation and reassurance, a reminder that these differences are real, meaningful, and rooted in brain function, not character or effort.

Key takeaways:

  • ADHD brains are more active even at rest.

  • They take in and respond to more sensory information.

  • They process stimuli that others may not even notice.

  • This heightened input can lead to distraction, overwhelm, and challenges with emotional regulation.

Living in a world designed for neurotypical brains means many neurodivergent people learn to mask or suppress their natural tendencies, an exhausting and emotionally draining process. Recognising and identifying ADHD or autism early can transform support and wellbeing.

Other forms of neurodivergence, including Tourette’s, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia, also have unique neurological patterns that deserve the same recognition and understanding.
